Anyone gotten hydroxide in their eye?
« on: November 29, 2010, 01:39:54 PM »
I got some diluted NaOH on my cheek the other day but washed it off my face almost immediately. My skin didn't sting or burn, but I'm worried about whether or not I got any in my eye when I was rinsing my face. I didn't feel any stinging or burning in my eyes either, but I'm not sure whether or not that alone is enough to rule anything out. Could it still have damaged the cornea or sclera of my eyes without causing any noticeable irritation or redness?

I did rinse my eyes three or four times after this occurred to me, but not thoroughly since I didn't feel anything. My myopic vision is already pretty bad, and I wouldn't want it to get any worse.

If it was some time ago and nothing happened up to now, nothing happened at all. You may visit a doc to be sure, but your eye would hurt or at least became red after being burned or even irritated.

hydroxide in the eye will cause the eye to become soap. If you're eye is not soap, I will venture to say you are fine.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.

Just the other day my classmate got 0.5M NaOH in his eye. He rinsed it a for a while and everything's ok. He's not blind or anything. I don't think you should worry! ^^

I haven't gone blind or had any irritation, so that's good. I do know that hydroxide can hydrolyze protein pretty easily, so I hope there hasn't been any damage that I can't see or feel.

Unless you were screaming after getting hit in the face, I think you are okay.  ;)
