Power of the Internet
« on: July 09, 2005, 08:31:04 PM »
Isn't it amazing how people say they found this forum by searching on the internet...and then athey ask a simple question that could easily be solved by an internet search?  I've noticed a lot of those lately...

I find that simply spectacular and am glad that you brought it up.  ::)

Probably they just want some assurance from real people who interact.
But, you are right. Some things are actually easily answered by
a simple websearch.
Just Google it!

Every time I am ready to post this url I think it is just too bold to be used if we want to look serious as chemicalforums on the whole.

By the way, on http://www.justfuckinggoogleit.com, you can go to

http://www.justfuckinggoogleit.com/mail/

to see emails that people have sent to the site after being sent there...some of them are hilarious like this these in particular...

i think your site is hilarious, but there is one thing that sticks out that detracts from its poignancy. "you appear to not be one of them" contains a split infinitive. the sentence shoud read, "you appear not to be one of them." "smart people" wouldn't split infinitives. just fyi.

joey

Gave me a good laugh, thanks!

Grammatically, I believe it should be
"You appear not to be one of them"
to avoid splitting the infinitive.

That would add a lot to the impact, I think.

No flames please, this is intended constructively.

Later,
-hp3

Honestly, how many people email sites to complain about split infinitives?  Just wondering...

No conplaints here, yet. Although it might be tricky to figure out my e-mail address. ;)
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

Actually I do not mind so much. Someone poses a question and I Google the answer. Then I post it and look like a Superman. Do you think they have found out my secret and I have to be Clark Kent again?

Upon further reflection one must be cautious when using the Internet as a resource. It is full of errors and there is no one editing for accuracy. I personally know of a site where they say that the driving force of Hindenburg airship fire was the paint on the skin and hydrogen is blameless. I personally have experimentally proven that it is likely that theory is false.  Yet, the myth keeps being propagated on the net. The site http://snopes.com is full of similar stories. Additionally, many have come to the wrong conclusions about a subject because they read something on the Internet and that item has only one facet about the topic. I have to be cautious when using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page since vandalism is rampant. I am an ardent user of the Internet and Google, but I have learned to be circumspect.
