Determining the percentage of chlorine
« on: September 15, 2005, 06:28:49 AM »
Hi,
I really need help for this science project. I need to have a product that contains chlorine (ex. Deodorant, Bleach, etc.). I also need to have a theoretical value of chlorine in that substance. The last thing I need is the process of how to determine the percentage of chlorine in the product. Thanks and hoping for some help soon!

u can determine composition of chlorine by precipitating it out in the form of silver chloride, after silver nitrate is added.

however it does not work for substances without a chloride anion, ie. bleach contains hypochloride, OCl-

That should be hypochlorite there, not hypochloride.   ;)
