Ideal Gas & Osmotic Pressure Relationship ?
« on: April 05, 2011, 12:08:50 PM »
Good Evening,,

I was asked by our doctor to do a research why Ideal gas law is the same as osmotic pressure law .. I tried to find through the internet but I didn't find anything. Even in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmotic_pressure) it only says " notice the similarity" but it doesn't say why ..

can anyone tell me why they are similar to each other ?

After Wikipedia, did you check a physical chemistry text book?
Individual results may vary

I have ATKINS' Physical Chemistry ,, I've searched in the book in chapter 5 where the osmotic pressure is defined , but it didn't talk about similarity ,,

http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/Hbase/Kinetic/ospcal.html

"The osmotic pressure of a dilute solution is found to obey a relationship of the same form as the ideal gas law"

I want to know why it obeys ??
