Intro Pchem books
« on: April 04, 2011, 12:19:26 AM »
Hello,
What are some good Introduction to Pchem books?  I will be taking Physical Chemistry next semester and I don't really have a grasp on what the problems will look like.

For General and Organic I spend $5 on used Intro books just to help explain things I was having trouble with.  Are there any of these books for Physical Chem?  I have found a few, but the most recent one I could find was printed in 1998, Introduction to Physical Chemistry by Ladd, 3rd ed.  Is this it?  Or are there others.  I don't fancy on spending more than $20 for a supplemental book, but I would like something to read while I am feeling nervous about my upcoming classes.

Thanks in advance.

I would recommend

Atkins' Physical Chemistry - Atkins & de Paula

This is now in its 9th edition I believe, so you can probably pick up older editions cheaply. 7th ed (2001) is <$1 now, and was almost the only physical chemistry text I used for my undergrad (though I didn't take advanced options in physchem). You can probably get 8th ed for $20-30.
My research: Google Scholar and Researchgate

Probably Principals of Modern Chemistry by Oxtoby have few chapters with an excellent description of concepts. Once you study this book you can study Physical Chemistry by GW Castellan which is an excellent book of PChem.
Atkins can be studied as supplementary text material.
