Extracting caffeine from different substances?
« on: September 11, 2011, 12:31:09 PM »
does anyone know any methods that could be used to extract caffeine from different substances, including tea, coffee, chocolate and pills etc. so that you are left with pure caffeine, and you can calculate how much caffeine was in each substance, but also that isn't too expensive

if i use methylene chloride to dissolve the caffeine then boil it off, will the caffeine be impure?

thanks

We did that in school a long time ago. The source was tea. It doesn't matter if it is green tea or black tea. You can let the methylene chloride evaporate. Collect the white powder and distill it. I don't remember the mp and bp.
