Assigning term symbols. How do you do that?
« on: April 30, 2011, 11:30:14 AM »
I need to assign term symbols for VF63- and NiF62-. So the two metal ions are d2 and d6 systems.

However, I haven't had any real explanation of how to assign term symbols. I tried looking around the internet but rather than calculating stuff, they want you to draw a massive diagram of all possible d electron states, and then add them up somehow.

So can someone walk me through these two ions and help me assign term symbols?

Okay, so for a V(III) complex in low spin, the term symbol would be

3D1

Is that correct? Assuming the net spin is 1/2+1/2 = 1
