Concentrating 33% H2SO4
« on: May 03, 2011, 07:15:02 PM »
Hello I need help on concentrating battery grade (Around 33%) H2SO4 as I need it for one of the steps on making dilute HNO3. I have the things I think I need. I want it to be safe, easy (can be a little challenging) and using not many super sophisticated pieces of glassware.
Thanks!

Dilute HNO3 can be obtained without concentration of this acid

Eddie here is more info about Maverick suggestion.
H2O boiling point is 100°C
H2SO4 boiling point is 337 °C
So water will evaporate first and then sulfuric acid.
There are 2 ways to know where to stop boiling:
1) measure volume ex. if you have 33% sulfuric acid then if you are boiling 100ml then stop when approximately 67ml boils off.
2) measure the temperature of the liquid while boiling and stop when temp is rising above 100°C.
I know you figure out this but i write just in case... :)
BTW don't use it to nitrate glycerin its too messy :)

You should probably due this in a hood. Sorry if that's an un needed statement, just wanted to make sure someone said it just incase you weren't aware.

This definitely needs a hood!  As you get near 100% H2SO4 white chocking fumes will be produced that are rather corrosive and toxic....
