I know you good people have answered a billion of the same questions, but I need to get my thoughts out and I need some help pointing me in the right direction if I'm wrong.

So here goes...

The question:

Write two half-reaction equations, balance the electrons and write a net ionic equation for the following.

Br_{2 (l)} + KI_(aq)   I_{2 (s)} + KBr _(aq)

My answer:

[I^- I + 1 e-] (oxidation)
 
[Br + 1 e- Br^-] (reduction)

Br + 1 electron + I^-   I + 1 electron + Br^-

Br + I^-  I + Br^-

Edited after I thought it through some more.
Is this correct?

seems to me you understand redox quite well. I see no harm in writing the final equation like this:

         Br₂ + 2 I^-  2Br^- + I₂

seems a bit more realistic to me.
