Do I understand redox?
« on: May 04, 2011, 08:13:11 PM »
I know you good people have answered a billion of the same questions, but I need to get my thoughts out and I need some help pointing me in the right direction if I'm wrong.

So here goes...

The question:

Write two half-reaction equations, balance the electrons and write a net ionic equation for the following.

Br2 (l) + KI(aq)  :rarrow: I2 (s) + KBr (aq)

My answer:

[I- :rarrow: I + 1 e-] (oxidation)

[Br + 1 e- :rarrow: Br-] (reduction)

Br + 1 electron + I-  :rarrow: I + 1 electron + Br-

Br + I-  :rarrow: I + Br-

Edited after I thought it through some more.
Is this correct?

seems to me you understand redox quite well. I see no harm in writing the final equation like this:

         Br2 + 2 I-  :rarrow: 2Br- + I2

seems a bit more realistic to me.
