A few synthesis questions im stuck on.
« on: May 14, 2011, 12:29:22 AM »
The way my teacher structures his questions is by giving you all the reagents and expecting you to know the products.
After the reagents, there is/are bold face numbers, those correspond to how many answers he expects.
The following are some practice problems, I did all but 1 problem, and I was hoping that it can be proofread and corrected.
The questions with stars next to them are the ones that I'm not 100% sure about.
The only one I didn't do was the one that has answers 38 + 39

Thank you in advance for the help

(38,39) Well let's see... We have an epoxide with a primary alcohol and some catalytic amount of H+... What sort of things can happen? What do you know about the reaction rates of the things that can happen that might tell you which happens first? Will sterrics play any role in the outcome of this reaction? What do you think it product looks like?

For 6 and 7, one is right and the other not. Just follow the mechanism and you should get the right answer.

Does that at the top indicate this is your final exam you'll be turning in for a grade?
Knowing why you got a question wrong is better than knowing that you got a question right.

Best question I've heard in this thread so far...

I do not think so. It is very common for professors to upload all of their old exams for practice... I have finals and the such from my professors and they looks as if I was taking them now... plus there is a 2 hour limit, what response could he get in that time?
