Mass of Caffeine Extracted into Chloroform
« on: May 17, 2011, 12:49:05 AM »
Fraction of caffeine in chloroform layer = KD . VCHCl3/KD . VCHCl3 x Vaq

KD = 8

A student had 90mg of caffeine dissolved in a water solution of caffeine, and shook it with an equal volume of chloroform. What was the mass of caffeine that was extracted into the chloroform?

Any help would be appreciated!

As the volumes of water and chloroform are identical, they will cancel in the Kd expression. If there are x mg in the aqueous, what mass is there in the organic phase?
