« on: May 24, 2011, 09:34:28 AM »
Hi,

Does anyone know of any substance or something to get rid off build up in the car exhaust system?
Many thanks for any suggestions

Chemicals, which dissolve carbon, will also dissolve the steel.

Not all of them. Depending on the actual composition of your carbon deposits, you might want to try some of the polycyclic aromatic compounds that are used to dissolve soot from chimneys. Be sure you read the toxicity labels before you begin.

RE "wash with polycyclic". Are you serious about using polycyclic compounds to wash exhaust in home conditions? 90% of them are too expensive to be used. 80% of them are smelly like hell. 90% of them are toxic. 20% are carcinogenic (numbers are very approximate).

It doubt it will work anyway. Some carbon is likely recrystallized into graphite, and some turned into carbide.

Sorry, you're right - bad copy-and-paste - I meant the solutions used to remove polycyclic aromatic compounds in soot in chimneys. As I understand, these are mostly very strong bases (essentially superstrength oven cleaners) and have their own hazards, but with care, goggles, rubber gloves, and lots of water, should be possible to handle safely at home.

Go to an auto parts supply store and get some break parts cleaners, or engine degreaser, or carburetor cleaner.

They are aerosole cancer and poison, but they work pretty damn well. Only use em out doors in well ventilated area and do not breath it in or get on hands!
