pH
« on: May 28, 2011, 03:37:03 AM »
Hi
Needs help with this task

A buffer solution is prepared by dissolving 1.51 g of NH3 and 3.85 g (NH4)2SO4 in 500ml water.

a) What is the pH in this solution?

b) If 0.88 g of NaOH is added to this solution, which will be the new pH?

thanks

/K

start with writing of the equations
ammonium sulfate is completely dissociated  and NH3 is the base which reacts with water to form ammonium and hydroxide ions

then you need to write the ICE table and use it to get the OH- concentration
this will give you the pH

No need for ICE table.
