Endothermic and Exothermic
« on: June 02, 2011, 10:50:53 AM »
Are the chemical reactions that take place when a battery is connected endothermic or exothermic? Be specific as you explain your answer.

I'm pretty sure it's exothermic, however, I'm not sure how to explain it.

A candle and a firework both can be ignited with a spark, but they release different amounts of energy as they burn. Compare and contrast the potential energy diagrams that would represent each of these burning processes. Be specific in your comparison.

For the first question. From your experience, does a battery get hot if you touch it while it is on?

You need to show your work for the second answer.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
