I've had small pieces of uranium-containing minerals (i.e., autunite - admittedly not the metal) in my rock collection since I was a kid. They were sold at rock shops just like any other mineral. (I assume, but have not checked, that they still are.)

Uranium as is isn't dangerous at all. Nor is it that rare. It's about 40 times more abundant then silver. It's also always bound in a mineral form. It requires many processes to purify it and isolate the metal itself. Even then you still can't just whip up an atmoic bomb with it.

I have bought uranium metal.

Go to the the strip club in prague right by the train station, ask the bouncer for igor, and slip him 1000 crown. A stripper will then escort you to the business room at the back, where various amounts are available.

It is all a matter of dose. We all receive several mSv a year from natural sources, exact number changes depending on where you live (and/or how often you are high above sea level - frequent flyers get substantially higher doses). Compare http://xkcd.com/radiation/

Small samples of uranium ore don't pose a risk, especially if they are left undisturbed and in some kind of a box (even closed glass jar will do - ore emits mostly alpha and beta and these are easily stopped). Dust can be dangerous if swallowed or breathed, but as long as the sample is in a form of solid rock that shouldn't be a problem. Using gloves to handle the sample won't hurt, washing hands afterwards is a must.

Also note that depleted uranium has many civilian applications (mostly based on its high density), and it is considered a safe material for these applications (given proper precautions are taken).

alpha emitters are mostly dangerous when dispersed as a dust that can be inhaled.

Not really true.  According to some camping/survivalist books I've read, Europeans can bet beta lights -- small tubes or plastic dohickies containing a tiny amount of tritium and a phosphor.  These provide a cheap, endless glow without a power source, or needing to recharge the phosphor with sunlight.  These can't be imported into the US.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

Even then, i am sure they can find this kind of stuff inside their country. Unitednuclear i think sells them, if i remember correctly.  ???

Someone on Youtube, got himself some carnotite from somewhere that is 2 hour away from him. The rock has carnotite. He processed it and made uranyl ammonium...whatever it was. The radiation was much higher than that of the original rock.
I'm in Canada and there is a mine in a neighboring province but it is too far. Then, there is the risk of contamination and the question of what to do with the stuff afterwards. You would have to take it back to the mine.
