Chair interaction
« on: September 11, 2011, 06:39:50 PM »
I don't really get what the question is even asking. I understand it has something to do with methane but I haven't a clue in the slightest what interacting in a 1,3 diaxal fashion even means and the text has literally nothing to say about this that I could find. I know how to flip chairs, find the most stable, etc... I think its just a matter of understanding the question.

Any help would be appreciated!

It is precisely about flipping cyclohexane chairs. If you have a model, then create the molecule in question, flip the ring and see which groups are also axial. If the axial methyl group is C1, what other groups are also axial (on C3 and C5; 1,3-diaxial interaction).
