Oxidation Reduction Reaction

lol ok, another redox question:

My textbook says the following is a redox reaction.

O3 +No--> O2 + NO2

Yet the oxidation number for
O3 is 0 and for O2 it is also 0. The numbers don't chage so how can this be a redox equation?

Ah, but you didn't look at the oxidation number for oxygen in NO2

The oxidation in the reaction side goes from

O3 w/ oxidation # 0 to NO2 oxidation # 2-

So it is reduced by 2.

You have to examine the whole problem :)

Ozone and hydrogen peroxide reactions are the ones showing that oxidation numbers are only an approximate concept that sometimes fails. Then you have to stick to half reactions.
