weak acid with weak base titration?
« on: June 09, 2011, 10:12:20 AM »
I encounter an M.C. question which I think it is very difficult.
I still don't understand why because the solution booklet has not explained.

The question is

-

The concentration of a weak base is found by titration with an acid of known concentration. Which of the following is the most important property of the acid?

A. It should be strong
B. It should be weak
C. Its concentration should be determined by direct weighing.
D. It should not react with carbonates.

What is the answer? In fact, the answer is B. I really don't understand why
the acid has to be weak to titrate the weak base! How can the end-point be
found????

That isn't the right answer.  Should be strong.

That isn't the right answer.  Should be strong.

i also suspect that the answer is wrong, but are you expert in this? thanks!

I'm not a chemist, only have a BS in chem, but I'm confident in this, unless you're a chem grad student and this is some special case.  Given that no additional info was posted in the question though, about any special conditions, I'm confident

thank you very much. so the answer is wrong, should be strong, right?

thanks again!

Should be strong, obvious error.
