Does α,β or γ emission change element?
« on: September 19, 2011, 01:46:13 PM »
I have a question and I hope you can help me. Does element change after α,β and γ emission?

Let me ask you another question, which may help you formulate your own answer to yours:

Which particles define an atom and what precisely happens during said emissions?

Neutrons, Protons and electrons.

alpha - emission of helium nucleus.
beta - emission of the beam of electrons
not sure of gamma though.

So does it change? I suppose it does, just need someone to confirm.

Gamma are just high energetic photons.

What are charges of alpha particles and electrons?

What defines identity of an element?

Number of protons define identity of an element. I don't know about charges. I'm a beginner even though I go to high school. Could you answer your first question?

Well, let's try it this way -- what is a helium nucleus?  What is it made of?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

And if you don't know - don't wait till someone tells you, google, wiki, textbook - you are surrounded by sources, just use them.

I have found out. Thanks to my school teacher. I'm not native English, American, etc so it's hard for me to use google and wiki. Mostly I understand but there are some texts that I do not and that was the case now.
