How do you extract Iodine from Tincture of Iodine?
« on: September 25, 2011, 02:21:37 PM »
Its a pretty straightforward question to ask of me. I am currently trying to piece together pure iodine. But I don't know how to extract pure Iodine from Tincture of Iodine(The antiseptic). Can someone please explain to me how to do it? ???

I don't know your Tincture of Iodine if is the same as China.
When I'm in China, my Tincture of Iodine has KI and I2 with CH3CH2OH, so I use KOH to make I2 change to KI and KIO3. Than I use H2SO4 make them to I2. And KI can use CuSO4 to make KI to CuI+I2, and use HNO3 let CuI to I2. That should be carried out in hood.
If you have ability to read Chinese. You can go to http://tieba.baidu.com/p/1142927896?pid=13208928294&cid=0#13208928294   this is a post of Chinese Chemistry Forum.
BTW, the chemical equation of CuI and HNO3 is wrong in this post.

I would say it is common for tincture of iodine to be KI + I2 + ethanol added and perhaps some water.

Here is what I would do...

In the tincture of iodine you have an abundance of KI3 when you react this with an appropriate acid say HCl you are left with KCl and HI3 follow this by the addition of an oxidizer like H2O2 and you will be left with free iodine. Filtration and washing is also required. For best crystals Vapor Deposition is the way to go, but can be quite hazardous to the untrained.

K-I-I-I  + HCl ---------> HI3 + KCl
2HI3 + H2O2 -------------> 2I2 + 2H2O
