Hybridization with Non Octet structures
« on: November 19, 2011, 03:27:11 PM »
How do you figure out the Hybridization for Non Octet Structures like XeF4.
The answer for the hybrid orbitals on Xe is supposed to be sp3d2
but when I tried to get the answer, I ended up getting the f orbital involved.

f-orbitals don't tend to form hybrid orbitals as far as I remember (although I might be wrong on that one). And you should be able to figure out the hybridization only by taking a look at a shape of molecule - which is, in this particular case, tetragonal planar with two lone pairs on xenon atom, thus sp3d2.

Square planar* (I couldn't correct the message :$)
