Help on benzoin to benzil question?
« on: February 27, 2012, 11:07:55 PM »
When the reagents were prepared for the oxidation of benzoin to benzil, the reagent Cu(CH3COO) was used instead of Cu(CH3COO)2. What effect does this have on the reaction?

a. The reaction will proceed too rapidly, resulting in hazardous conditions.

 b. Oxidation of benzoin will not occur.

c. There is no effect on the reaction as the acetate ion is needed for the reaction.

 d. Reduction of benzoin will not occur.

What is the difference between your two possible reagents: Cu(CH3COO) vs. Cu(CH3COO)2?  They appear to have the same atoms ... but something important is different.  What is that?  How woulf you name these two compounds?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
