Absorption maxima at 230, 260 and 410 nm?
« on: March 11, 2012, 07:34:14 AM »
Hi all,
I have a mathanol extract (from bacterial culture) showing absorption maximum at 231 nm and two smaller ones at 260 and 415 nm. Any ideas what king of compounds that might be? Thanks in advance!

This is a very tough problem to work with.  UV-Vis spectroscopy isn't very useful for predicting a compound's structure.  Since you said you've extracted with methanol, presumably from bacterial culture solids, the 260 nm absolution indicates something like a pyrimidine, but may really be anything.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

You should separate the compounds and take a NMR and Lc or GC/MS and IR also. Then you  will be able to elucidate the structure with more confidence.
