Making sense of correlation diagrams
« on: March 25, 2012, 03:55:57 PM »
Heres a question on my sample exam paper:

which has me confused. So the free ions ground state term is 4F. I can see that it correlates to a ground state term of 4A2 so I know that the UV-Vis spectrum will have 2 absorbance peaks corresponding to jumps between 4A2 and the excited terms with the same spin multiplicity which are 4T2g and 4T1g. I can probably figure out the proportion of these peaks energies too but whats confusing me is how the ground state term is down at -12 Dq. If I'm not mistaken, t2g orbital electrons are located at -4 Dq. Which is it, -12Dq or -4Dq?
