reaction of carboxylic acid and ammonia
« on: April 12, 2012, 01:17:47 PM »
if carboxylic acid is made to react with ammonia in the presence of conc. sulfuric acid what product will be obtained? will it be an amide? in that case what is the role of sulfuric acid in the reaction? and if not an amide then what?

I could imagine different scenarios for this. My first inclination is that no reaction should take place. I could also imagine this is some kind of industrial process in which those are the raw ingredients in which these are simply heated together. Who would have thought hydrogen gas could be produced by heating water (as in a nuclear reactor) or that methane could produced from heating coal and water together?

What is the "carboxylic acid is made to react with ammonia in the presence of conc. sulfuric acid" reaction?

An amide?

How about ammonium sulphate and the ammonium salt of the carboxylic acid?

ammonium sulphate and amide is what my instinct tells me...but if you guys are thinking i am asking this question because i want to probably perform the reaction in the lab...that's not true..actually this was a question in one of the assignments my professor gave me and he seems to be getting ANILINE as the product by some mysterious way obviously i can't think of..how can aniline be a product of this reaction? ???

in the question is given a general representation of carboxylic acid i.e. RCOOH..that's it..and i just realised that i confused this with another question..the product that my professor seems to be getting is a PRIMARY AMINE i.e. RNH2 not ANILINE...sorry..
