Acid and Base
« on: June 09, 2012, 09:05:51 AM »
Is there any reaction between carbon dioxide and sodium hydrogencarbonate solution? ???
My thought is that carbon dioxide, an acidic oxide , dissolve in water in the solution to form carbonic acid,so typical acid property will be shown, they react to form sodium carbonate ,carbon dioxide and water...

But,when i tried to write the equation CO2 can be cancelled,Does it mean that Sodium hydrogencarbonate itself,can decompose to form sodium carbonate + CO2+H2O?

CO2 + H2O ::equil:: H+ + HCO3-

or

CO2 + H2O ::equil:: H2CO3 ::equil:: H+ + HCO3-

(in practice these are indistinguishable as long as both steps are fast enough)
