Synthesis of bromomethyl terephthalic acid
« on: June 13, 2012, 11:53:33 AM »
Hi,

I am primarily an inorganic chemist but would like to synthesise bromomethyl terephthalic acid (C9H7O4Br) which is benzene subsitituted with CO2H groups in the 1,4- positions and a CH2Br group on any of other the 4 equivalent positions. I cannot find a published procedure.

Suggestions for any synthetic routes that you can think of would be much appreciated.

Thanks,¨

With only one acid, you can brominate the benzyl position using N-bromosuccinimide in chloroform at reflux. I'd try that first.

You can buy 2-Methylterephthalic acid. This you could brominate with NBS.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!

Discodermolide said it a lot clearer than I did!

Thanks for your suggestions guys.  :)

With the suggestions I found a procedure in which AIBN is added in catalytic amounts as an initiator so I shall order the chemicals and give that a go.
