Oxalic acid
« on: December 03, 2005, 08:04:54 AM »
anyone know what is the type of reaction (is it redox??) between:
Oxalic acid (HOOC-COOH) with Pottasium permanganate (KMnO4)? and what is the product from this reaction??
I've search it in my organic chemistry book and I find that carboxylic acid is impossible to be oxidized again....but KMnO4 itself is one of the oxydator...and the reacton is working with the color change from deep purpple to deep yellow and then continue till colorless....

(COO)22- -> 2 CO2 + 2e-

Wrong! formula of oxalate is C2O42-

It is the same!

The oxalic acid is two carboxyl groups bound together (COOH)2. The formula of oxalate can be (COO)22- or C2O42-
   O          O
    \\       //
     C ---C
    /        \
HO          OH

The underlined H Atoms are the acidic H

Typo corrected - C2O42-, not C2H42-, Borek
