Reaction and equilibrium
« on: November 08, 2012, 03:25:58 PM »
Hey guys i need a little help and i have a couple of questions. We have the following reaction:

Ba(OH)2 (s) ⇌ Ba2+(aq) + 2 OH- (aq)

If we add hcl then will hcl react with Ba2+ and OH or with BA(OH)2? When HCL is added which way will the reaction go in order to reach equilibrium?

Thanks in advance

Well, the best way to approach the problem is to think about what you know about HCl. What kind of chemical is HCl? Based on that can you think of what might happen if HCl is added?

HCl is an acid so it will probably react with OH. Then the equilibrium will go to the right for the reaction. Is that right?

That is correct.

Does it matter? In both cases you will observe exactly the same outcome and exactly the same equilibrium.
