How to determine Ni concentration above a solution
«
on:

Greetings all,
I am trying to quantify the amount of nickel that is escaping a solution at room temperature so that I can show that we will be FAR below the permissible exposure limit (1mg/m
3
). The solution composition is 5% HNO
3
, 94% H
2
O, and 1% Ni.
EHS is currently telling us that we must wear SCBAs while handling this solution outside of the hood...
Thanks in advance!

Seal the solution in a vessel, equilibrate, and sample the headspace with GCMS?
Generally, though, with volatile metals, it's better to be safe than sorry. Ni(CO)
4
, for example, will kill you very quickly.

Do or do not. There is no "try."

Hello Nate Wave, please
contact me privately
. We are an Air Testing laboratory specifically accredited by AIHA for this kind of testing. I will send you equipment for Nickel and Nitric Acid sampling according to NIOSH or OSHA standard methods. With our report on hands you will be able to prove your point (or not).
Method proposed by Vex cannot be used for your project as it is not an official method and will not be accepted neither by your EHS nor governmental inspector.
Edit by Borek: please don't post private emails on forums, it just feeds harvester bots. We have a private message system which can be used for private contacts (or at least for exchanging email addresses).
