Ammonia + silver nitrate rxn equation?
« on: August 28, 2012, 10:24:30 PM »
Alright, I couldn't find this anywhere and the teacher isn't exactly spelling it out in front of me.

So AgNO3 + NH3^+  --> ??

First I know the rules that Ag + any hydroxide will create Ag2O and H2O. However this is ammonia and the teacher even tells us to write it in NH3 form and not the other way of NH4OH.

Also NH3 binds with any acid as well and take the H+ however... there is none other then the 2 species in the start.

My attempt at it:

AgNO3 + NH3^+ ---> Ag2O (s) + H2O (L) + 2NH4^+ (aq)

Net ionic:

2Ag + NH3 + H2O? ---> Ag2O + 2NH4^+ + H2O

Have you learnt about complex ion formation? I think this is what your teacher wants: a complex ion of silver and ammonia.

It's true that ammonia reacts with acids, but not only Bronsted acids... what other kinds of acids are there?

Do or do not. There is no "try."
