comparing lewis acidity with bronsted acidity
« on: September 04, 2012, 05:50:33 AM »
hi all
as all of us know bornsted acidity can be defined by their pka but what about Lewis acids for example I want to compare the acidity of a bronsted acid like Malonic acid with SnCl2  :P is there any standard to define which one is more acidic?  ???

No. That's the problem with Lewis theory. In Brønsted-Lowry theory all acids have - technically - their strengths compared to that of water. In Lewis theory there is no common solvent, so there is no universal strength scale.
