what do you mean by alpha , beta hydrogen atoms?

Well if you have a functional group such as a carbonyl, e.g.butan-2-one.
The alpha hydrogens are on the carbon next to the carbonyl group, the beta hydrogens are on the second carbon from the carbonyl group.
