Alternative gas for GC-MS instead of Helium
« on: September 21, 2012, 02:56:42 AM »
Hi, all.

People who use GC-MS might be heard about Helium supply is going down.
Someone told me that doesn't extend over a long period of time.

But to prepare,
What gas is more suitable to replace Helium gas for GC-MS??

I am not an expert in MS, but from the GC standpoint Nitrogen is better than Helium as it gives better separation on the column. I believe, if you detect masses above 30 z/m, than you can use nitrogen. This is what I use for GC-FID and it costs only 20% of the hellium price. Another alternative is Hydrogen, but I have never tried it myself.

You can buy quite cheap and effective and safe hydrogen generators for GC and GC/MS use.

Using Hydrogen as a carrier gas isn't dangerous??
