Difference between sol-gel and solution casting
« on: February 11, 2013, 07:11:15 PM »
Hello,
What I am currently working on is generating thin films on hard surfaces. I've read some papers and a wikipedia article on the sol-gel method and solution casting, but I don't quite understand the difference. I am getting the vibe the latter concerns itself with organic polymers. The idea behind both seems to be 1) solution with substrate of concern 2) Let solvent dry, 3) Process substrate to stick to surface. So, how do these two differ?

What kind of films are you talking about? If it is nanoparticles, then in the first case you do the synthesis of the nanoparticles in situ, whereas in the second case you just dry a droplet containing pre-formed particles..
