easy question concerning IUPAC rules
« on: September 24, 2012, 10:18:23 PM »
I was asked to label these two:

1:
2:

for 1 I got the answer: 1,1,1-tribromyl-3,3,3-trifloropropane
for 2 I got the answer:1-bromo-1-chloro-1-floro-2-methyl
butane

I'm positive that I am labeling the molecule correctly based on structure and not IUPAC rules, however the answer apparently is wrong. is there some way to combine using IUPAC rules the "bromo, chloro, floro" etc descriptors into one or something if they are on the same carbon atom?

1,1,1-tribromo could be reduced to tribromomethyl, likewise trifluoromethyl. And they usually are in many publications, especially the latter being often employed in medicinal chemistry. My ChemDraw provided the same names as you.
What was the correct answer if these names are incorrect?

The prefix "bromyl" is incorrect. Hint: you got the right prefix for a Br substituent in the second one.

Also, you have not spelled fluoro correctly.

butane

Again, fluoro.
