Hi there.

I have a report due in a few days on the crystal structure of a chemical related to my course (Biochemistry).
I have choosen Penicillin V after many failed attempts at finding info on both ribosomal RNA and DNA polymerase.

I managed to find a paper from 1993 ''Crystal Structure of Penicillin V Potassium salt'' which appeared in a Korean journal. This paper outlines the a,b and c values for the lattice, as well as the angular values (among other things)

I am looking for info on where to possibly find the following. Unit cell information, close-packing type, x-ray diffraction results, and graphs relevant to the rest.

It is not a long report, only 1 page for that information and 1 page for references and graphs.

I have been using science direct and google scholar to search, and have come up with very little. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

Emmett

Edit: I also am in the process of downloading ''Crystallography open database'' from www.crystallography.net, in hopes of some info

If you know a b c you must already know the unit cell.

Thanks discodermolide. The first one is unfortunately the same paper I have already been through. The second however is new and I will have to look through it now.

I will check the wikipedia entry but the problem is it needs to be specific to penicillin. Perhaps there will be info on the page to find resources on different crystals

Thanks again :D

Have you tried the structure databases? This might give you an entry into some of them...

It sounds as if you are more interested in the crystallography side than the molecule itself.  However, if the structure itself is of interest, then may I direct you to the lack of planarity of the lactam bond?  Most amides are nearly planar.

The Cambridge Structural Database might be a possibility, but I am not terribly familiar with it.

Korean publication contains complete information on this structure.
Also you can search CCDC and get CIF file from this database.
