Suggestion for a Thread
« on: December 30, 2005, 05:31:54 AM »
Another post has got me thinking that maybe there should be a thread where people list sources of elements and compounds that can be gotten under generic names. Also, it could include relative purity etc.

For instance -

XYZ Salt is a source of sodium chloride but it may have inert compounds in it according to the label.

Or

ABC Drain Cleaner is a source or sodium hydroxide but my analysis of it has proven it to not be pure.

Where would we put such a thread? The Advertisements and Testing Forum and Chemistry in Everyday Life seem to be likely candidates.

How say you admins, et al?

I would suggest putting it in the citizen chemist forum, those are the individuals that would use it the most. If you start such a thread, I'll sticky it so others can add and make it a master list of sorts.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

I think I will make the thread title -

Common Sources of elements, compounds, and mixtures

Any other suggestions let me know

I am composing the first entry in the thread that will explain it

I will make a second entry that will serve as an example

I think I will use table salt and sodium chloride with the maker being Morton Salt

I might make a third entry using table salt substitute

I think that the list of information for each should be

Substance name
Common name
Uses
Commercial name
Potential impurities comments
General comments

Looks good. I suggest when people add a new chemical to the thread that at some point you add it to the first post and I'll prune the rest of the chatter.
