Increase in acid Concentration
« on: October 30, 2012, 12:58:36 PM »
Hello All,

I have a very complex mixture, which containg around 2000mg/L of acetic acid. Now i want to increase the acetic acid cocentration in this mixture to 7000mg/L. That means i need to put in around 5000 mg/L of acetic acid in that. Could anybody help me how much pure acetic acid (17M~mol/L) should i put so the final concentration reaches 7000mg/L (only pur acetic acid can be added not the diluted one). What is the way to calculate the amount of acetic acid required.

About the mixture i don't have enough information, just that it contains acid, and some other compunds. The density of the mixture is also not known.

thanks for your kind advice and tips.

Regards!

You're looking for a specific milligrams per liter, so you will need to know the final volume.  That's for starters.  You say you have pure (glacial) acetic acid, so you could just mass the liquid.  But if you have 17 M, you will have to convert that to grams, and you will need the density (usually printed on the bottle.)  You have a bit of calculating to do.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

Ok. After reading some basic info i come to find out the formula for concentration i.e. M1V1=M2V2
M1= 7g/L=> (7/60.5 = 0.115 mol/L)
V1= 5ml (amount of my sample)
M2 = 17.5 M (concentration of my acetic acid)
V2 = ?  (amount of acetic acid to be added)

So calculating using this formula i get = 0.032ml of acetic acid.

I hope that's how we can reach this concentration. Or should i use 5g/L as M1.

Thanks for the help.
