electron configurations for compounds

I fully understand how to find the electron configurations for elements on the periodic table. However, how do you find the electron configurations for compounds? (like magnesium chloride, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride)

You don't. At best - for ionic compounds - you can assign electron configurations to ions.
