DCPD, grubbs catalyst and color
« on: October 24, 2012, 02:52:39 PM »
I was wondering which catalyst for ROMP of dicyclopentadiene or other cyclic alkenes (1st gen, 2nd gen, etc) would add the least amount of color to the finished material? Im also not limited to Grubbs catalyst, as I am able to work in an inert invironment if another metathesis catalyst would impart lower color.

Thanks

You can get rid of the catalyst (and the color) by adding some butyl vinyl ether (or ethyl vinyl ether) at the end of the polymerization. Let it stir (or soak) for at least an hour and then precipitate your polymer in Methanol (or wash it off with DCM). Your polymer will be light grey.
