Identifying Therapeutic Oil by NMR, IR, and Mass Spectrum
« on: January 17, 2013, 11:42:49 PM »
Hello,

I have been trying to figure out what the compound indicated by the following spectral data is.

I do believe there is an aromatic, that the molecular weight is 152, and that there is a carboxylic acid or a derivative.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What does the signal in the 1H-NMR represent?

Start by creating a MF from the NMRs. If no symmetry, 13C-NMR can give a signal for each carbon. 1H-NMR should confirm and give number of hydrogen atoms. In this case the difference is the number of oxygen atoms.

Thank you for leading me on the right way in identifying this therapeutic compound.  Unfortunately, being new to nmr, I am unfamiliar with the terms associated with it.  What does MF mean?

I'm not sure, to be honest.

Based on the IR data, I was thinking that there may be an amide functional group, but I'm not sure based on the NMR. How do I know that there is no amide functional group from the NMR data?

There is no nitrogen as the MS indicates.
As Orgopete said count the atoms.
The 1HNMR provides the number of protons, the 13C the number of carbon atoms (provided there is no overlap). Work out the mass and subtract it from the mass given in the MS, this should indicate how many O atoms there are in the molecule.
Have a look here for chemical shifts of groups around 4ppm.

Therapeutic oils are rarely pure and often mixtures. Is yours?

MF is molecular formula

From 13C-NMR, C8.
From 1H-NMR, H8.
From MS, MW 152.
152-96-8=48
How many oxygens with 48 mass units? Three.
With C8H8O3, a benzene ring, and hydrogen ratios of 1:1:1:2:3, what are the possibilities, remember the benzene ring has four of the hydrogens?
Hint, what unit has three hydrogens?
