d Orbital Energy
« on: January 31, 2013, 07:52:02 AM »
Hi everyone,

I am confused with the energy of different d orbitals in an octahedral complex. I understand that in crystal field theory, dxy, dyz and dyz are degenerate, having symmetry of eg and lower in energy compared to dz2 and dx2-y2.

However, in MO, dxy, dyz and dxz are no more degenerate. The same situation also applies for dz2 and dx2-y2. Can someone help me understand why that is so?

Thank you very much.

Kelvin
