Help a craftbrewer?
« on: February 25, 2013, 04:07:00 PM »
Greetings,

I'm a craft brewer with little basic chemistry knowledge from many years ago.

I'm trying to ascertain the power of various acids in neutralizing (if that's the correct term) calcium carbonate (alkalinity)

The only one I have is that apparently 25% H2SO4 can eliminate 292mg of CaCO3 per ml of acid.

I would like to know the power of hydrochloric (20%), lactic and phosphoric (85%) acids in similar terms.

Your help/input much appreciated.

Cheers

Nigel

You should start with the reaction equations. Then calculate number of moles of acid per mL of the solution (for better results you should check solution density in tables). Then use stoichiometry to calculate number of moles of CaCO3 - and finally convert moles to mass.
