Is it possible to make graphite oxide in aqueous solution in a lab using no expensive / manufacturing equipment?

Seems like it:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphite_oxide#History_and_preparation  You can at least try, at the High School level, and see what you get.  Since you posted this first in the High School sub-forum, you might get credit for trying, if the teacher thinks yo can work safely enough.

The wikipedia page only shows the basic ingredients, and the first method shown is too dangerous. Any detailed instructions to make it?
