why CH2Cl2 as solvent for SnI4 synthesis?

Hello, can someone please explain to me why dichloromethane would be used over water for the synthesis of SnI2 from just Sn and I2?

You might make Sn(OH)2 if you used water.  Plus, I think that SnI2 will be pretty Lewis acidic and might coordinate water.
