I am looking at how oxides of period 3 change from basic to acidic as you move left to right, or from ionic bonds to covalent bonds. How does bonding affect the whether a compound is basic or acidic?

What I learned was that ionic oxides would have a basic nature while covalent oxides would have acidic properties. While oxides that have both ionic and covalent nature like aluminum oxide have both properties. I remember that it's due to the mechanism of reaction with water.
