I keep putting myself on the "Member Map" but my entry always seems to get removed.  Any particular reason?

Its because you edited your profile. It's a bug. You can add yourself to the member map just fine, but when you save any edits to your profile it gets erased. Just save yourself to the member map, but don't save any changes in your profile.
