The ^E ?

A system was found to absorb 500.0 J of heat from the surroundings and did 25.0 J of work on the surroundings.  Is the ^E for the surroundings 525 J?

what does ^E refer to? I'm not sure of your notation. All I know is:

change in energy of system = change in energy of surroundings (1st law)

I would of suspected 475J.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

I would of suspected 475J.

dQ = dU + W

500 = dU + 25

dU = +475

With reference to first law, ie;. change in energy of system = change in energy of surroundings, ^E for the surroundings is thus +475 too.
