Solubility of 1,3-dithiane-1-oxide
« on: April 22, 2013, 04:21:08 PM »
Hi smarty pants chemists!

I'm a non-smarty pants biochemist and I need to figure out if/how soluble this compound is in water. I have had a very small quantity of the enantiomerically pure isomers made for me by some (smart) chemist but I don't know what I can dissolve it in. I have very little and none to waste, and the solvent must be friendly to my protein and its subsequent crystallization, so I can't just test out different solvents easily as I would with a commerically bought substrate.

I need a 0.05-1M (higher the better) stock solution and have a strong preference for water (obviously).

Any help here?

If I have to wing this, things might go very wrong and I could lose months of time : /

Thanks to anyone in advance who is much smarter than me :)

ChemSpider suggests that theoretically it is soluble in water:  http://www.chemspider.com/Chemical-Structure.7848569.html, however a 1 M solution may be asking too much.  Note that this is predicted solubility.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
